Frequently asked questions

What is the 90-day currency requirement under 135.247?
Under 14 CFR 135.247(a), a pilot may not act as PIC of an aircraft carrying passengers unless the pilot has made at least 3 takeoffs and 3 landings in the preceding 90 days in an aircraft of the same category and class as the one to be flown. Night operations require a separate 90-day currency for night takeoffs and landings.
Is separate currency required for day and night operations?
Yes. Night currency (takeoffs and landings between the end of evening civil twilight and the beginning of morning civil twilight) must be maintained separately from daytime currency. A pilot who is current for day operations is not automatically current for night operations.
What counts as a takeoff and landing for currency purposes?
The FAA requires full-stop landings for currency under 135.247 for passenger-carrying operations (not touch-and-goes). The aircraft must be the same category and class -- turboprop landings do not count toward jet currency, and vice versa. Simulator training may not substitute for actual flight currency under 135.247.
Can a pilot fly as SIC if their PIC currency has lapsed?
A pilot with lapsed PIC currency may still serve as SIC, provided they meet SIC qualification requirements for the specific operation. However, they cannot be assigned as PIC or listed as the required PIC on a Part 135 operation until currency is restored by completing 3 takeoffs and 3 full-stop landings within the 90-day window.
