This is a recency-of-experience requirement that the pilot can maintain through normal line flying. 135.297 is a formal IFR proficiency check conducted by an FAA inspector, examiner, or authorized check airman — it tests instrument flying skills and must be done every 6 calendar months regardless of how many IFR hours a pilot has flown.
How many night landings are required for Part 135 night PIC currency?
14 CFR 135.247(a)(2) requires 3 takeoffs and 3 landings to a full stop at night in the preceding 90 days to act as PIC on a Part 135 operation that includes a night landing. Night is defined as the period beginning 1 hour after official sunset and ending 1 hour before official sunrise.
Does completing a 135 proficiency check satisfy the biennial flight review?
Yes — 14 CFR 61.56(d) states that a person who has satisfactorily accomplished a pilot proficiency check, conducted by a FAA inspector or an examiner, for the issuance of a certificate or rating, or a Part 135 pilot-in-command proficiency check under Part 135, has met the flight review requirement.
