What does "calendar months" mean for Part 135 training?
Under the FARs, "calendar months" means the period expires at the end of the same-numbered month in the following year (or 6 months for semi-annual checks). If your last IFR proficiency check was June 16, it is valid through June 30 of the following year for a 12-month interval, or December 31 for a 6-month interval.
How often is the 135.297 IFR proficiency check required?
14 CFR 135.297 requires each pilot who is designated as a PIC and who flies under IFR to have an IFR proficiency check within the preceding 6 calendar months. The check must be conducted by an FAA inspector, a designated examiner, or an authorized check airman.
What is the difference between 135.293 and 135.299?
135.293 is a general knowledge and competency check for all Part 135 crewmembers — it covers aircraft procedures, maneuvers, and emergency operations and is required every 12 calendar months. 135.299 is a line check conducted in actual revenue service (not a simulator) that tests the PIC specifically on the routes and areas of operations in the certificate — also required every 12 calendar months.
Does the flight review (§61.56) apply to Part 135 pilots?
Yes — pilots must hold a current flight review to act as PIC under Part 91, and Part 135 operations require the same underlying pilot certificates. However, most Part 135 proficiency checks (such as the 135.293 competency check) substitute for the biennial flight review, so most active Part 135 pilots satisfy this automatically through their required checks.
